Study of the Needs to Provide Eyeglasses for the Homeless People

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyse an influence of provision of eyeglasses for the homeless people on their visual state and the quality of life related to the vision.

Method: This study was conducted with a survey of one hundred and two homeless people using self-support and self-reliance facilities from January 2017 to September 2017 to find out their visual state (distance and near) and the quality of life related to the vision, such as social function, mental health, social role and dependence before and after they were provided with eyeglasses. Survey result was assessed by converting the lowest sore to 0 and the highest to 100. The higher score indicates better visual state and the quality of life related to vision.

Result: The visual state of the homeless was found to be the poorest in case of a near vision, and there were many opinions insisting that their current vision limits achievement of work. It was found that the better visual state was provided the better quality of life related to vision(p<0.05), and that the dependence and social function did not show a significant difference but distance visual state, near visual state, social role and mental health improved significantly after eyeglasses were provided(p<0.05).

Conclusion: To supporting eyeglasses for homeless people improves their visual state and the quality of life related to vision and therefore, the results of this study were considered to have a positive influence on their self-support and self-reliance.
